Galerie Pentcheff presents a previously unseen group of works by Henri Martin

On the occasion of the 2024 edition of the Salon du Dessin, Galerie Alexis Pentcheff presents previously unseen works on paper, including a set of pastels and watercolors by Edouard Vuillard, a 1977 work by Joan Miro, a watercolor by Emile Bernard and a rare set of preparatory drawings for one of Henri Martin's major Parisian decors.

Preparatory drawings for the grand décor of the Vème arrondissement town hall

The pool in the Luxembourg Gardens provided Henri Martin with a theme of choice for his decor for the Marie in Paris's 5th arrondissement.
A polyptych made up of five decorative panels set between columns in the building's main staircase, the Luxembourg basin's teeming cast of characters gave the artist the opportunity to evoke a large number of figures of all ages, both male and female, whom he studied meticulously in his drawings.
They include little children in sailors' jackets sailing their boats on the Grand Bassin, their nannies busy under the sewing trees, couples in love and peaceful grandparents.
The last of Henri Martin's major decorations, this series of works produced in 1935 closes the chapter of a professional life in which public commissions were of particular importance.
Some twenty studies from this series are presented by the gallery on its stand at the Salon du Dessin, providing a unique opportunity to examine and appreciate the artist's preparatory work.

A book devoted to Henri Martin's major decors is currently being prepared by Marie-Anne Destrebecq-Martin, a specialist in the painter's work.
